Jesse served as a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for nine years and has subsequently worked for law firms in Virginia and Washington, DC, performing work in the fields of Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights.
In 2019 Jesse opened Fenty IP Law PLLC, to bring the power of IP to businesses and underserved communities. Jesse volunteers and serves in leadership positions within the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the National Bar Association (NBA).
Experience
Starting as a Patent Examiner in 1998, Jesse examined thousands of patent applications in Tech Center 2800 of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. As an Examiner, Jesse granted over 400 Patents in the highly technical field of integrated circuits including light-emitting diodes, photoelectric device, thin-film transistors, bipolar transistors, MOSFETs, capacitors, high dielectric constant materials, lightly-doped drains, gate arrays, electrostatic discharge devices, MEMs devices, and semiconductor packaging, to name a few.
While mastering the specific technology of integrated circuits, Jesse became very proficient in the Patent process as a whole. This knowledge laid the foundation for his firm grasp of the IP process both domestically and internationally.
While serving as a Patent Examiner, Jesse attended law school part-time at American University’s Washington College of Law, completing his law degree in four years part-time while working full time. During law school Jesse also participated for three semesters in the Civil Practice Clinic, representing clients in DC and MD courts
Leaving the U.S. Patent Office in 2007, Jesse has worked at several law firms in the Washington, DC area to develop a broad range of skills.

Outreach
One reason the United States continues to fall behind other countries in the inventive space is that many people in the U.S. do not know what Intellectual Property is. Many people have heard of Patent, Trademarks, and Copyrights, but the nuances of these tools and how they can be used have eluded a great portion of the American public.
Not only through the practice of law, Fenty IP Law, PLLC aims to increase public awareness of this area of law. This will empower people to take control of their ideas and start businesses to provide desired products and services to the public.
